Postcard Project

The theme of my project was based all around hockey. The rink that i play out of is where i took all of my pictures. This place holds so many great memories for me growing up. It is a place i go to let everything out and put everything behind me for a few hours. Hockey is what i am passionate about so i thought i could bring it into the three postcards.

Postcard 1:
For this first postcard we had to represent Repetition. I wanted to incorporate the movement of the puck by repetition. I also wanted to make the viewer feel as though the puck was coming at them. As the puck gets closer to the viewer it gets bigger and has a greater clarity about it rather than when the player initially shoots the puck. It is very small and also more faded and less detailed.

Postcard 2:
This post card was about transforming the space in some way to make it unusual. In the background of this picture i have the celebration of the national USA team from the greatest miracle in history in the hockey world to represent celebration obviously. I also put colorful balloons spread out throughout the image because hockey is a game of celebration but you relate balloons to parties and birthdays and it is not something you would find at an ice arena.

Postcard 3:
Lastly, this postcard was about concealing and revealing. For this I used the stands of the ice arena. Throughout the stands we see railing going up the stairs and in that i decided to put a quote that is rather ironic. The stands are typically for the fans and parents and its a place to watch hockey and it is  also somewhere where I would rather not be. Making the stands the background represents concealment because if i was placed in the stands looking down onto the ice the glass creates a barrier between me and my passion.

  1. My favorite postcard is your first one. The pucks are very well placed in order to lead the eye around the composition. I enjoyed that you used the pucks to show movement and included movement in your concept, very clever.

  2. I think that the first postcard is the most successful in my opinion. The way that the puck is repeated is giving it a sense of motion. I think it is visually your strongest postcard but conceptually it might be the one that could be worked more. I understand that it represents motion but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to conceptually get from it. The puck is small but it’s also large in this photo. The repetition gives us motion and I’d like to hear something more about that motion and what it means to you.

  3. Firstly, the fronts of your postcards are awesome. I like them a lot!
Now, of the three, I find the first solution to be most effective. The implied motion is dynamic, smooth, and clear. It's well composed and integrated.
However, I feel the other two are less cohesive. They feel very cut-and-paste. Though I can see what you were going for, I'd try to expound upon these ideas a little further.

  4. Your first image is my favorite
The simplicity is what I like and position of the pucks gives me a feeling of motion.
It is evident that you like hokey. The alteration of your image is apparent and yet it feels natural.
Nice use of repetition, the angle of the puck is what really plays into the feeling of motion in this image.

  5. My favorite postcard was the third one. The crowd is a huge part of the dynamics and environment of the sport, especially hockey. Using those words is super ironic since the stands are always full. The back of your postcards are awesome and they show that hockey is really important to you. Photoshop was done well. The puck coming at you in the first postcard is super realistic and a little unnerving.

  6. I really appreciate how much thought you put into something you’re passionate about, as well as the fact that you put a lot of work into the backs as well as the fronts of your postcards. I really enjoyed your first postcard, the enlarging size of the hockey puck provides nice movement but also has a fun aspect to it.

  8. Kendra,
I like your third postcard because I really felt your personal connection to the third picture. I think because you choose a topic so connected to yourself you were successfully explaining the place. I really liked seeing a message that is important to you imbedded into the picture. You found the perfect topic to express yourself while still teaching us something about women’s hockey.

  9. Your third postcard gave me a really great feel for your interpretation of a sport your passionate about. Your use the progression of the text backwards really emphasizes the intensity of the sport and the pressure of playing in a moment. The decision to use an empty set of bleachers, I think, brings forward the idea of the game being a personal experience of mental and physical measures.

  10. Kendra,

My favorite postcard is your first. I like the use of the hockey puck – the repetition does indeed capture movement. It looks like the sizing and angle for each puck looks perfect. I like how the puck seems larger than life yet the player seems so small and insignificant in the background. It brings attention to the importance of the puck during a hockey game.

  11. Kendra,

I really liked your first postcard. It was neat that you focussed on the object which hockey is all about and the small object everyone is after. The Second Post card as well was pretty neat because I guess I don't see hockey as celebratory but rather a sport and quite a bit of fighting so it was neat to see it in a different perspective through your postcard.

  12. Kendra,

I liked your first postcard the best. The use of repetition to show the puck in different stages of motion, was a clever idea. having each puck be at a different level of clarity was also a great idea.
